Contemporary Dutch policy and legislation facilitate the use of high quality, accessible and affordable assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) to all citizens in need of them, while at the same time setting some strict boundaries on their use in daily clinical practices. Through the ethnographic study of a single clinic in this national context, Patient-Centred IVF examines how this particular form of medicine, aiming to empower its patients, co-shapes the experiences, views and decisions of those using these technologies. Gerrits contends that to understand the use of reproductive technologies in practice and the complexity of processes of medicalization, we need to go beyond ‘easy assumptions’ about the hegemony of biomedicine and the expected impact of patient-centredness.

The development of science and technology in recent decades has enabled IVF methods to occupy a leading place in the treatment of infertility. This book introduces some modern infertility treatment methods that are part of IVF technologies, focusing on clinical practice. Topics discussed include semen analysis, ovarian stimulation, and basic methods applied in the IVF laboratory. The book also addresses diagnostics and treatment of the immunological factor of infertility as well as the relationship between infertility and reproductive age. This book will increase readers' knowledge and understanding of the treatment of infertility using in vitro technologies.

In Thailand, infertility remains a source of stigma for those couples that combine a range of religious, traditional and high-tech interventions in their quest for a child. This book explores this experience of infertility and the pursuit and use of assisted reproductive technologies by Thai couples. Though using assisted reproductive technologies is becoming more acceptable in Thai society, access to and choices about such technologies are mediated by differences in class position. This comprehensively updated and expanded second edition builds on its successful and popular predecessor, retaining the practical features which made the first edition such an essential guide to IVF. The edition describes additions to the range of ART clinical treatments, including the use of testicular and epididymal sperm, blastocyst stage transfer, and new perspectives in cryobiology and cryopreservation techniques. By incorporating laboratory techniques and protocols, with an even greater emphasis on quality control, it provides an indispensable and practical account. The introductory chapters covering the scientific background that underpins effective laboratory practice have been substantially expanded, derived from research in mammalian systems into the molecular biology of oogenesis, oocyte maturation, and early embryo metabolism. This second edition distils a wealth of practical and scientific detail for the benefit of all IVF practitioners.

"Human beings have been producing more twins, triplets, and quadruplets than ever before, due to the expansion of medically assisted conception. This book analyzes the anticipatory regimes of making multiple babies. With archival documents, participant observation, in-depth interviews, and registry data, this book traces the global and local governance of the assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) used to tackle multiple pregnancy since the 1970s, highlighting the early promotion of single embryo transfer in Belgium and Japan and the making of the world's most lenient guidelines in Taiwan"--

The field of In Vitro Fertilization is a relatively new field in medicine, constantly on the move. This field is an exquisite example of the vast power in the complementary use of basic research with clinical practice and opened a new route of great basic and clinical research possibilities. The knowledge base that allowed the accomplishment of the idea of in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer has much developed since. The vast body of research pertaining to this field allowed deepening our understanding in the processes related to reproduction. In this book on in vitro fertilization we present new and interesting updated information in various aspects of this field. This work is a result of collaborative work of an international group of professionals dedicated to contribute to the advancement of our knowledge.
